Why Study The Grand Old Book?
We study when we love what we want to achieve in life. The desire to know, gain knowledge, is already ingrained in us as humans.
The new birth in Christ brings in us a hunger for God’s word which eventually fades as the old and new tend to mix. Of course, anyone who loves God will submit themselves to deeper learning of the One who saved them.
Why Study?
King Solomon, the wisest of all, richest ever, warned us waaay early! The world learns from experts, right? Well, the Holy Spirit ensured we heard from the one who knew the world really well.
In Ecclesiastes 12:1, he reminds the youth to give time to God because a day will come when we will have had enough of the physical pleasures. In verses 12, 13, he nails it by saying that the whole duty of man is to fear Him and keep His commandments. Also, much reading of books won’t help. The best medicine for Christians is the word of God alone. Studying the Bible, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit will keep us till the end.
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” 2 Timothy 2:15-19
Study To Be Approved By God
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:1-2
How can we present our bodies as a living sacrifice? When Jesus in you is made an everyday reality as we surrender to do His whole will.
To Overcome Shame
Studying the word of God helps us overcome shame that really matters. Not what the religious and earthly cultures consider shame.
“Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.” 1 Corinthians 15:34
We need to awake to righteousness - grow in the knowledge of Christ.
To Know The Truth
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”John 14:6
All those who love Jesus know Him as the truth. It does not stop at simply knowing Him. You dig deeper, you live out the spiritual blessings you are blessed with in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 1:3).
To Stand on Sure Foundation
Jesus is our sure foundation and no other. He is the chief cornerstone. The more we study Him, the greater the surrender and preparedness to meet Him at His soon coming.
“Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” 2 Timothy 2:19
To Be His Sheep
Only when you learn under a Master can you recognise His voice. Only when you know the Father closely will you learn about His love. What is it that we need to learn of Jesus to be His sheep?
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Matthew 11:29
Hope you were edified by this quick view of the need to study the word of God. Maranatha, Praise God and Amen!
