Naked, Yet, Not Ashamed
“And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” (Genesis 2:25)This verse is now being taken out of context and literally applied in certain "liberal" cities in the world. People are seen walking around naked. What did it mean to be created naked? The garden of Eden, prior to sin, was the best time for man on earth. He was created in the image and likeness of God, having dominion over the earth. He lived a spiritual life, meeting God every evening. He even laboured, without sweat, dressing and keeping the garden.1. Man did not know what it meant to be nakedMan only knew what was revealed to him. He knew whatever God told him. His knowledge was limited to his surroundings, and God's desires. We know today the destruction that has come upon earth because of increasing knowledge and rejection of God.2. There was nothing created to be ashamed ofAll that was created was good in God's sight. Man lived free of any bias or preference. There was no discrimination of any kind. How often we wish that everyone lived in perfect harmony with each other! It was so in Eden. Man was innocent, though vulnerable (created lower than angels, out of the dust of the ground).3. Man was covered by lightThe glory of God was upon Adam and Eve, when they were created. They were created in the image of God and was covered by Light (Jesus).4. His eyes weren't openedHe lived on earth but was opened into the spiritual realm, and so his physical eyes could not perceive the nakedness. What happened soon as their eyes opened?“And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.” Genesis 3:7Soon as they knew they were literally naked, a sense of shame came upon them. They were ashamed of their nudity and covered themselves with meagre clothes made of leaves.“And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” Genesis 3:10-11, 21 Our earthly eyes continue to deceive us everyday. We are more concerned about what people think and say, our need to have a good reputation takes focus. The corruption of sin destroyed our ability to think, feel, and speak in pure innocence. In Christ Jesus, everything changes. We are rescued to inhabit a body made in heaven. This dying body will perish, but those who live in Jesus, will move onto putting on a new heavenly body. For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.
