Why be careful about Music?
Petra, Gaither Vocal Band, Philips, Dean and Craig, Michael Card have been my all time favourite singers, songwriters. Easily my top 5 candidates for their meaningful lyrics and devotion in their singing.
A song without meaning is useless, no matter how beautifully you sing it. It caters to your natural senses. It triggers your passion but if it isn't glorifying God you are heading for an emotional roller coaster.
I wrote earlier about Music being only for Worship. I wanted to highlight another point from the Word of God which reveals the need to stay away from Music that does not glorify God alone.
Off the many angels that fell from Heaven, one such is the Anointed Cherub. What does the Bible say about the angel?
Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. (Ezekiel 28:13-15)
The anointed cherub was created with musical instruments fitted into the body. I am presuming this angel produced the background score in Heaven. God being the singer, of-course! (Zephaniah 3:17).
The angel was an “anointed” one. He had a special anointing for music too. A special anointing is necessary to sustain yourself by the throne of Grace, before the Holiness of God - the holy of Holies.
God set this angel on the HOLY mountain, at the highest place because he was perfect in every way. To be placed in such a high position must have been an amazing experience, in the dwelling place of God
From playing the holiest, and purest form of music his pride led him to fall into sin. Iniquity was found in him. The impact of sin brought him down to hell from the highest place in heaven.
The greatest composer and musician from the holy mountain of God became an enemy of God. Now he hates God and only desires to destroy all who God loves. We often underestimate the power of sin and keep falling, Gods amazing Grace preserves us. The angel had gone beyond repair and his only agenda, similar to other fallen angels is to take as many non-believers and believers as possible to hell.
The musician that played only for the glory of God, now plays only to draw people away from God. When we look around the world today, music creates an atmosphere of duplicate love (lust), and is about glorifying creation or relationships that honour man rather than God. Music videos are full of lustful acts and immoral messaging, Lyrics that contain human philosophies and fantasy, and more.
Most of Christian music today is trying to bridge the gap to draw people into Christ but it’s having an adverse affect. It’s getting difficult to say what’s worldly and what’s not. Even Christians make foolish statements like “music is life” etc. Those who love the Word of God know that Jesus is life and only music that puts Him in the centre is pleasing to God.
Watch and pray, said Jesus, because the times are evil. We need to watch out for every area of our life with equal zeal lest the Satan finds a gap.
