The 3 Gifts Of The Wise men

The Wise men from the East brought the 3 gifts when they came to meet baby Jesus. The 3 gifts were — Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh!

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭2:11

Each of these gifts have spiritual significances. They served as symbol for Jesus — referring to the life He was going to live as He grew up.

Briefly let’s take a look at the spiritual meaning of each of the 3 gifts:

Gold, first of the 3 gifts

It is a rich, precious yellow metal. During those days, mostly kings and affluent people possessed gold. However the Wise Men brought gold as a gift for the newborn. After all, they were going to meet the King. Moreover, when the Tabernacle was being built, God asked Moses to use only pure gold inside the instruments of the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place.

Spiritually Gold stands for faith — That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: 1 Peter‬ ‭1:7‬. Apostle Peter says faith is much more precious than the gold that perishes. Job says he will come forth as pure gold after he has been tried by the Lord. Job 23:10. So, the Lord desires that His children grow in faith.

Frankincense

Frankincense gives out a sweet odour when burnt. It was also used extensively in the Tabernacle as a sweet savour unto the Lord.

Spiritually, frankincense refers to a life of prayer and praising. And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. Ephesians‬ ‭5:2‬. Like Jesus, we must also offer ourselves as a living sacrifice and become a sweet smelling savour unto God. We need to walk in love, patience, faith, trust Jesus and press forward.

Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. Psalms‬ ‭141:2‬

Myrrh

In the olden days, myrrh oil was used for purifying young maids. They were massaged with this oil along with some other substances and presented before the king. We see that during Queen Esther’s time:

Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;) Esther‬ ‭2:12‬

Spiritually, Myrrh refers to a life of suffering. It is bitter to taste, but has a sweet smell. Jesus had to endure a lot of suffering and afflictions, while on earth. He was crucified and later conquered death — now He’s seated at the right hand of the Father. So, when we suffer for Jesus and endure afflictions, in due time the Lord will lift us up.
