Why You Need To Remember Lot's wife?

Remember Lot's wife, Jesus reminds us in Luke 17:32.

Why? What does the Bible say about her? Nothing much at all. Yet, Jesus says, we need to remember her.

What do we understand from the Word about Lots wife?

1. Lot's wife was a Sodomite woman
2. The angels forcibly removed Lot's wife and daughters from Sodom
3. She turned to see the burning city of Sodom & Gomorrah
4. She turned into a pillar of salt

To really understand who Lot's wife was, we need to understand the setting in which the Bible records her existence.

In Genesis 18:20, And the Lord said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; that he would go to check if the cry of the land matched the actual state of the land.

Lot had married a Sodomite woman, he was unmarried till he entered Sodom, having selfishly chosen a fertile land for himself during the 'separation discussion' with Abraham.

Sodom was a land of plenty, in modern context, a developed nation with all basic facilities easily available, ahead in science and technology, ample entertainment, etc. Lot's wife was born and brought up in the luxury and grandeur of Sodom's pleasures. She would have been well educated and a kind of elite, after all she was married to the Mayor of the city.

When the angels, sent by God, came to destroy the city, Lot, his wife and daughters had to be forcibly removed from the city. Lot was probably hesitant to leave his position and comfort, similar for his daughters.

Why we need to remember Lot's wife

His wife had spent the most time in Sodom compared to the rest of the family and she had her heart set in the place. She never imagined she would have to ever leave it one day. When the day eventually arrived it consumed her so much that her damaged heart overcame all Godly prudence.

She turned to see the burning city, her desires and lusts all being consumed, her eyes fixed on worldliness and sensual pleasures, disobeying the word of God. She turned into a pillar of salt.

Jesus tells us that the last days will be like in the time of Noah, Lot, when all the world will be consumed in its own lusts, and He would come to save only those who were righteous - walked in obedience to God's Word.

Get ready, Jesus is coming soon. Turn away from the lusts of the flesh, eyes and the pride of life. Stay on the mountain. Watch and pray.
