Who Is A Lazy Christian?

Laziness is a spiritual problem. It has more to do with the state of a person’s mind and heart than it has to do with the body.

Who are lazy Christians?

They are those who are unwilling to labour for the bread of life. They lack the heart to grow in the Lord. Love is the primary motivation to live a Christian lifestyle.

I’d like to briefly share SEVEN points on laziness from a few verses;

Being Lazy Is Foolishness

Go to the ant, O lazy one; Observe her ways and be wise, Which, having no chief, Overseer or ruler, She prepares her food in the summer. And brings in her provisions [of food for the winter] in the harvest. (Proverbs 6:6-8)

Laziness in a believer reveals a spiritual famine in the minds and hearts. He is one who does not prepare for what is to come. He lacks the wisdom to prepare for the days ahead.

Believers cannot afford to live lazily. Whatever they do, they do it unto God (Colossians 3:17,23). They are always found ready and hopeful because they know the price of their new life - the precious blood of Jesus. Only those who love God and have Godly sorrow exhibit the necessary level of preparedness (2 Corinthians 7:10,11).

Laziness begets Oversleeping

“How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.” (‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭6:9-11‬)

Those who are lazy sleep a lot, they live without purpose. They lack any inclination to pray or meditate on the Word of God. They drive themselves into spiritual poverty.

True Believers love to live because they are alive! They are fired up in the realisation of God’s love and power. Happy to live another day for the glory of God. They are eager to wake up and labour for the Lord.

A Lazy Person Is Irritating

As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him. (Proverbs 10:26)

A lazy believer lacks wisdom and understanding and therefore is difficult to work with. On the other hand, a true believer is a joy to partner with and serve the Lord.

Laziness causes Slackness

The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. (Proverbs 13:4)

A lazy believer is uncommitted to his faith. He is slack concerning his calling; and finds himself in nothingness.

A true believer is committed to the Lord. Consistent in serving, disciplined, set his face in the Lord. He loves God and obeys the Word of God.

Laziness undermines value of time

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing. (Proverbs 20:4)

The lazy do not value ‘time’. They waste time.

The true believer is earnestly waiting in prayers and supplications, meditating daily to save himself and others along with him. He knows the time is short and needs to be saved because of rising evil.

Proud heart

The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason. (Proverbs 26:16)

The lazy are too arrogant to listen to anyone. They think too highly of themselves. They refuse to understand the Word of God. They live on their own assumptions and false theories.

The true believer learns of Jesus, humble and lowly in heart. He is reasonable and wise beyond his years. He is focused on living the word of God.

An unkempt Vineyard

I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man lacking understanding and common sense; And, behold, it was all overgrown with thorns, And nettles were covering its surface, And its stone wall was broken down. (Proverbs 24:30-31)

Ever entered the room of a lazy person? It’s full of clutter. Many believers are found in such a state spiritually. Their heart is just like the state of Jerusalem in the time of Ezra and Nehemiah. Their walls (salvation) are broken. Their gates (life of praise) are torn down. The cares and the riches of this world have ravaged their heart and mind leaving them scattered and confused, doubtful and full of fear.

A true believer lives because Jesus lives. He is like a tree by the waterside, lush green and bearing fruits in time. He hates the things of the world, and lives a consecrated lifestyle. He is burdened for the house of God and is found mourning and invested in the things of God.
