Set your expectations about suffering in line with God's word

Most new believers get scared when they hear about the suffering in the Christian life. Living in fear will not prepare you to face the trials ahead. Walk by faith. Set the right expectations for yourself in this journey.

Like everything we do in this life needs the right approach, the Word of God sets our expectations correctly to approach this life in a godly manner.

Consider these five points to get your perspective right.

Five basic expectations about suffering as you journey in Christ.

  1. The godly will suffer persecution (2 Timothy 3:12)
  2. The suffering is light (Matthew 11:29, 30)
  3. It is for a short while (2 Corinthians 4:17)
  4. It is nothing compared to the eternal glory (Romans 8:18)
  5. God is with all those who are with Him (Hebrews 12:1,2)

The apostles, and the believers of the early church, knew what it meant to follow Christ. Jesus had made it clear that as the world hated Him, they too would be hated (Matthew 10:22). In his final prayer to God before his resurrection, Jesus reiterated that the world hates believers (John 17:14).

Suffering is inevitable for the practising Spirit-baptised Christian as he prepares for the rapture. The Word assures us it is for a while only. Not only is it for a short time, but it is also light. Jesus gave us a light burden which He desires we carry with Him by our side. To top it all, with the sufferings on this planet forgotten, we will enter into His eternal glory.

I can't imagine how Adam or Methuselah lived without the baptism of the Holy Spirit for over 900 years! Today, even Spirit-baptised believers fail miserably. The worst part, we hardly live spiritually in the 35-50 years of experience we get.

How great is God's mercy towards us?

Be glad in the Lord, and Rejoice! Maranatha, Praise God, and Amen.
