How To Avoid Being Offended?
If you notice carefully, when someone gets offended or hurt because of words spoken or an action, you will find that that hurt or offence could have been completely avoided.
By this I mean that most of the time, we ourselves are the reason for getting offended or hurt. How we react to that situation at that point in time, is the KEY to how we feel after that situation is passed. Getting offended is easy, but there needs to be a way to not get offended easily.
Well...!! Let’s see what God has to tell us from His Word about how not to get offended by anything:
1. Forbearing one another - The dictionary meaning of the word “Forbearing” refers to being restrained or being patient. However, when we consider forbearing from the eyes of Jesus, we will find how Jesus has been patiently enduring us from the time we came to know Him. Even today and until this moment Jesus forbears us knowing who we really are! Forbearance happens when it is joined with Forgiveness.
2. By preserving our fleshy heart - A heart of flesh is a soft and sensitive heart. It is sensitive to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit speaking to the heart. God cannot speak into a hardened heart. A heart of flesh is always in a broken and contrite state before God.
3. By reminding ourselves who we really are - Just like Abraham says, Lord I am but dust and ashes.. Genesis 18:27, we must understand this truth and remind ourselves daily. A dust is an insignificant thing, as good as nothing. A blow of wind is enough to unsettle it and the same particle of dust is difficult to be found once again. When we consider ourselves as dust, we will not be offended by anything that others say or do against us.
For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. Psalms 103:14-16
