How Should Your Conscience Be?
Jesus spoke a lot about the heart and the mind during His days on earth. The heart and the mind are two important aspects which together constitutes the CONSCIENCE; the inner judge, which judges everything we say, do or think. It convicts our words, thoughts and actions as right or wrong.
As children of God and people who love Jesus, our conscience should be of two types:
- Good Conscience — Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. 1 Peter 3:16
- Pure Conscience — Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.1 Timothy 3:9
Every child of God should preserve his/her conscience in a good state. In the Old Testament period, during the Conscience Period, people who lived then, lived according to the dictates of their conscience. People like Abel, Enoch, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, lived during this period.
When a good work was done, the Conscience acknowledged that indeed a good work had been done. But when a bad deed was done, the Conscience kept convicting and pricking the person that what was done should not have been done! This was how saints during Conscience Period lived.
Thereafter, it was during Jesus’ time on earth, that the aspect of Conscience was once again brought into perspective. Jesus reiterated the gravity of how meticulously our conscience needed to be preserved. The heart, which is the seat of all emotions, is the place where all our words, deeds and actions originate. Therefore our heart and mind needs to be preserved in a good and pure state because what goes inside our heart and mind is of utmost importance to God.
Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life. Proverbs 4:23
