Emotionalism

Everyone is emotional. Emotions are who we are as humans. Emotions are part of our soul, a response of the heart. Sin corrupted our spirit, soul and body. Our thoughts and feelings, desires and vision got corrupted, disconnecting our spirit from God.

Man became a slave to sin and the desires of the flesh. Bound by the powers of darkness, he lost the ability to understand God.

Unless we do not understand God, we cannot live a victorious life. Only those who understand God can choose to obey. Sadly, most Christians are involved in emotional worship and not in spirit and truth.

WHAT IS EMOTIONAL WORSHIP OR EMOTIONALISM FOUND IN THE CHRISTIAN JOURNEY?

Emotionalism is a lifestyle devoid of the truth - a display or expression of ignorant emotion that makes a person stumble in his spiritual walk.

When Jesus spoke about His crucifixion, Peter reacted with passion saying he will not let it happen to Jesus. Jesus immediately rebuked him because he was speaking against the will of God. Jesus needed to suffer and die so we could enter eternal life. (Matthew 16:21-23)

When Lazarus died, and Jesus came after four days, Martha approached Jesus and confidently responded to Jesus about how he would rise later. But Jesus indicated again that He was going to raise Lazarus now! (John 11:20-26). Martha displayed an emotion akin to knowing Jesus as a mere man, not the giver of life itself.

At the same time, Mary was in deep sadness and did not come to Jesus immediately. Earlier, she was the one who poured ointment and wiped His feet with her hair. She too, got caught up in her emotions to realise the value of Jesus being present.

We find many examples where believers respond emotionally but not spiritually. When we cry, we display our humanness. Nothing wrong with it. But, when we fail to see God's plan, it's a terrible weakness - A hell-bound journey.

Many children fill in the Spirit and remain emotional instead of munching on God's word and waiting on Him. Their experience lasts for a day or two, and then they go back to their old-man emotions. They become ever-learning, ever yearning stumbling blocks.

Martha and Mary were crying for Lazarus. Jesus cried too! But because of their unbelief. Beware of unbelief entering into our lives! Purify your emotions through the Word of God (John 15:3).

Until we don't leave all, we cannot gain all. Leaving all is an emotionally draining journey. But gaining them back will make you forget the past pain. God will gather His people in time. Go ahead boldly and live out the truth in grace.

Maranatha, Praise God, and Amen.
